Letter from the Head of School |
|
Dear Friends and Families of Spartanburg Charter School,
I am writing to bring you up to date on the exciting things happening at the school. We are the first state public charter school in the Upstate. This is historic as we are offering to the public many of the advantages of a private education without the tuition costs. These include single gender classes, low teacher-student ratios, school uniforms, inquiry-based learning, Spanish, Yoga, Physical Education, Art, Music, and Character Education.
We are entirely funded by the SC Legislature and have no affiliation with any local school district. We received our funding when the state budget was approved in May. Since then we have been aggressively getting ready for the opening on August 12. In the past three weeks we have approved the following:
- Twenty two teachers, three academic aides, and the office manager have been hired.
- Reached agreement to purchase the historic Southside Elementary School at 385 S. Spring St. This was the former Arts Center. It has been restored to its original luster when it was built in 1937 as a WPA project.
- Enrollment continues to grow. Our maximum student capacity this year will be 264. In some of the lower grades we actually have a waiting list.
- We are offering on-site and community-based after school care.
Important dates: Open House for the community and families will be July 20 from 6-8 pm. Registration will be July 21 from 4 to 7 pm and July 22 from 10 am to 2 pm. Play dates will be every Thursday beginning July 2 thru August 6 at Barnet Park’s Interactive Fountain.
While we have accomplished much, much remains to be done. We need your contributions, time, talents, and your network in helping to equip the school with furniture, supplies, and technology.
Please contact me if you have any questions or ways you may be of assistance.
With regards,
Dr. Chuck White, Head of School

PARENTS PLEASE NOTE!
To secure your child’s spot in the school for the 2009-2010 year, you must return to SCS a completed Acceptance Confirmation Form within two weeks of the date of your acceptance letter. Your child may not be enrolled unless we receive your completed Acceptance Confirmation Form within that time frame.
Spartanburg Charter School (SCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Charles White (Spartanburg) to the position of Interim Head of School effective immediately through July 1, 2010. SCS was approved as a member school in the South Carolina Public Charter School District (SCPCSD) in November of 2008. In naming White to the Head position, SCS has added a highly respected member of the Spartanburg educational community to its growing staff. White has nearly thirty years of experience as a residential principal and deputy agency director for the award-winning South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, where his responsibilities included strategic planning, resource allocation, policy development, and creation and oversight of new initiatives such as the Division of Residential Life Services.
In addition to his professional experience, White brings a wealth of volunteer service experience to SCS. White has served on the board of directors of a number of local nonprofit organizations, including the Children’s Advocacy Center and as chairman of the Charles Lea Board, Wounded Warriors Group, and RSVP. He is also a graduate of Leadership Spartanburg. His experience in the operation of both educational and nonprofit organizations will serve as a key asset to SCS. Kenneth Smith, chairman of the SCS Planning Committee, cited White’s “commitment to innovative education and providing children the resources they need to succeed” as critical factors in the decision to hire White. Martha Petoskey McPherson, P&I Grant Program Director, said of White, “We are honored to have the benefit of his supportive leadership style and his expertise in the areas of education, business, and philanthropy.” |
