FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We would like to reduce our “environmental footprint.” Do you provide transportation? Because SCS is not provided transportation funds that are provided to traditional public schools, SCS currently does not intend to provide transportation via school bus. However, it is the SCS Planning Committee’s desire not to deny access to the school because of inadequate transportation. Thus SCS will facilitate transportation if lack of transportation prevents a child from attending the school. SCS will coordinate with the Parent Organization to establish a carpool system to ensure that students who lack transportation are transported to and from school on a daily basis. In this way, SCS will be the only public school choice program in Spartanburg accessible to students who lack transportation. Do you provide before-school and after-school care? Parents whose children will attend the school will be integral to developing these programs. Our before-school and after-school programs must be determined according to the population served as our goal is to meet the needs of our specific students. For example, there may be programs on-site or we may partner with local agencies to provide services off-site. Get involved today to join in the planning effort. How often will you teach foreign language? The master schedule currently includes one period of foreign language instruction every day. Our goal is fluency. What will the school hours be? The SCS day will be similar to that of a traditional public elementary schools. The draft master schedule proposes that the day begin at 7:45 with a school-wide assembly and classroom morning meetings and end at 2:45. How will SCS meet the needs of my child, who is an advanced/gifted and talented student? SCS will offer supplemental instruction every day to students who could benefit from advancement. Decisions regarding placement in advanced classes will be data-based and will be made through the Intervention and Advancement Team (IAT), which includes the parent, teachers, and administrators. What will the school uniform be? No logos required! SCS students will wear collared shirts and khakis pants, shorts, or skirts. The parent group that is forming now may further refine the uniform—for example, it may be that K/1 students will wear red shirts while 2/3 students will wear blue. |
